The opening weekend of conference play presented a challenge for the OUAZ women's basketball team, matching up with 14th-ranked The Master's. The Spirit led by nine at halftime, but could not hang on as they fell 67-60 to the Mustangs on Friday night.
The freshmen stole the show again for OUAZ, as the team's top three scorers were newcomers.
Sedona Anderson scored 16, while
Landyn Lovelady put in 11 and
Bryn O'Rourke added nine.
The Spirit put up an 8-for-14 (57.1%) performance from behind the arc in the first half, a main contributor to the halftime lead. OUAZ kept The Master's off the board from three-point range, as the Mustangs did not make one until the third quarter.
OUAZ did not get inside a lot offensively, and failed to get to the free throw line. The Master's used its size getting 32 free throws, converting 22 of them.
The Mustangs outscored OUAZ 44-28 in the second half, helped by shooting 58% from the field and converting 8-10 from the free throw line in the third quarter. Anderson was able to get the Spirit within two points with 50 seconds left, but The Master's converted its free throws down to close out the game and preserve a seven point victory.
Saturday brings another opportunity for OUAZ, as they wrap up the two-game series with The Master's. Tip-off is scheduled for 11:30AM, and fans will not be permitted inside of Faith Arena.
