A three-game losing streak to end the 2019-2020 season kept the OUAZ women's basketball team four games out of a GSAC playoff spot. The team was sitting in a good position to make its first conference playoff appearance halfway through its conference slate last season, but losing five of its last six games dashed any hope for the Spirit.
The team now comes back, healthy and deeper than ever, looking to capture the program's first ever postseason bid. The march toward the tournament starts on Friday, as 14
th-ranked The Master's visits Faith Arena for a weekend doubleheader.
This season provides an excellent opportunity to make the NAIA National Championship tournament, as the GSAC will not be hosting a tournament in 2021. Instead, the conference's two automatic bids will go to the winners of the two pods – Pod A and Pod B. OUAZ belongs in Pod B, along with The Master's, William Jessup, San Diego Christian and Arizona Christian. A two-game sweep of the Mustangs this weekend could clear the path for the Spirit to get to the national tournament.
OUAZ has yet to find victory against The Master's, as the Spirit hold an 0-5 record to the Mustangs over three seasons. It has been an uphill battle for the Spirit as well, with the closest loss being by 14 points back on November 28, 2018.
This weekend provides an excellent chance for the Spirit to end the streak, and it all starts with
Natasa Radovic. The sophomore earned both GSAC and NCCAA player of the week for her performances against SAGU American Indian College last week. Radovic posted double-doubles in both contests, averaging 23 points and 12 rebounds in the two-game sweep of the Warriors.
Senior point guard
Elizabeth Garcia has come back to action stronger than ever after missing all but one game last season, plus the season opener this year. She averaged 5.5 rebounds, 6.5 assists and five steals in her first two games since October 2019.
Freshmen
Bryn O'Rourke and
Sedona Anderson put together impressive weekends as well. O'Rourke scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds on Saturday, and Anderson scored in double-digits both nights, while totaling five assists over the two games.
No fans will be permitted inside of Faith Arena for either game this weekend. Live video of the contests can be found at
