The OUAZ women's soccer team was so painfully close to a national championship last season, and the returning players had to sit on that loss for nearly 400 days. Saturday marked the first time the team hit the field since December of 2019, and they tied a familiar foe that's had the Spirit's number in the past.
The Master's came to Surprise for a non-conference contest, and erased a two-goal deficit, and neither team could find the back of the net in overtime as the Mustangs and the Spirit played to a 2-2 tie on Saturday afternoon. This is the first non-loss result the Spirit have mustered against The Master's in three contests.
OUAZ scored two goals within 45 seconds of each other to take a 2-0 lead in the 22nd minute.
Saipress Jones scored off of a great feed from Paige Murray Hernandez, and then it was Lertzman's turn to get set up by Murray Hernandez.
The Master's scored to pull within one in the 36th minute, then tied the game in the 61st minute thanks to Elizabeth Radmilovic. The Mustangs controlled most of the play in the second half and overtime periods, and the Spirit had its chances too, but neither team could capitalize.
Goalkeeper
Chloe Gutierrez set a freshman program record for saves in a game, making 11 stops. Those saves are also ties the record for single-game saves in the program's history.
The Spirit are not set to play for another month until they travel to Texas for a pair of games. The schedule is ever-changing, so stay up to date at ouazspirit.com for the latest women's soccer schedule.
