SURPRISE, ARIZ. - This weekend marked a chance for the OUAZ women's tennis team to get back on track after losing its conference opener to Arizona Christian the week prior. The Spirit also got a chance to host a non-conference dual against a top-10 opponent, but were unable to win either matchup at the Surprise Tennis Facility.
Friday – William Jessup 5, OUAZ 1
The Spirit had a chance to grab the doubles point, but fell just short in both matches.
Stevie Wenzel and
Mitzy Rangel fell 6-3, plus
Payton Maricle and
Katie Fyall got even closer, ultimately falling 6-4.
Wenzel won the Spirit's only point as William Jessup did not have a player to match up with her. Rangel was the closest to winning a set in singles play, as she pushed the second set of her match against Stephanie Alsman to an extra set, but fell 7-5.
Saturday – (9)Indiana Wesleyan 7, OUAZ 0
Indiana Wesleyan entered the day at 25-0, and the Spirit had a hard time getting anything going on Saturday. The Wildcats showed why they are ranked ninth in the country as they took every point from the dual.
Rangel and
Danica Milan won a point in their doubles match, and Rangel did manage a point in her singles match.
Payton Maricle did win a point in each set of her match with Sabrina Porter.
The Spirit will get a chance at its first conference win this upcoming Friday when they host Westmont, and could pick up yet another GSAC victory when Marymount California comes to Surprise on Saturday.
