MERCED, Calif. – The OUAZ men's volleyball team opened their road trip to northern California with a 3-1 win over UC Merced on Friday night in a Golden State Athletic Conference match at Hostetler Court.
With the 25-21, 25-21, 25-27, 25-18 victory, OUAZ (7-2, 3-1 GSAC) has now won two straight after suffering their first two losses of the season.
Riding a .333 hitting night, the Spirit banged out 53 kills in the win. They fought off 52 kills from UC Merced (6-6, 1-2) by limiting the Bobcats to .227 hitting with 36 digs and eight blocks. OUAZ also tallied eight service aces.
Quaid King led three Spirit players in double figures with 22 kills on a .382 hitting effort.
James Yahner added 11 kills and
Quentin Campbell finished with 10.
Ian Fields posted a double-double of 49 assists and 15 digs with
Joaquin Santa Cruz adding 10 digs. Fields and King each had two aces and Yahner and
Blake Music had three blocks apiece.
Chris Morikawa led Merced with 18 kills and eight digs.
OUAZ now heads to Atherton, California for a Saturday match at No. 5 Menlo. At 10-0 on the season, Menlo is one of four NAIA teams without a loss and their 10 wins are the most of any of those teams. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. (AZ).
