MESA, Ariz. – It was another slow start for the OUAZ baseball team as they gave up six runs in the bottom of the first in a 9-6 loss at No. 25 Benedictine Mesa on Tuesday afternoon at Gene Autry Park.
After stranding a pair of runs in the top of the first, OUAZ (5-11) saw Benedictine Mesa (16-5) put up six in the bottom of the inning as they defeated the Spirit for the third time in as many tries this season.
The Spirit got three runs back in the top of the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly from
Elijah Celaya and a two-run single from
Jared Crockett. Down 7-3 in the top of the eighth, OUAZ loaded the bases with nobody out but they only scored one run on a walk from Celaya.
BenU pushed two more runs across in the bottom of the eighth to open a 9-4 lead. The Spirit would get two in the top of the ninth on a wild pitch and a groundout from
Jordan Hollins to setup the final tally.
"Tonight we weren't very tough minded," OUAZ head coach
Tim Montez said of his team. "Our bullpen did a great job of settling things down after a rough first inning and if we don't shoot ourselves in the foot with five errors and then get some timely hits with runners in scoring position this could have seen a different result."
Crockett finished the day 2 for 5 with those two RBI for his sixth multi-hit game of the season.
Adrian Salazar singled in the ninth inning to extend his current hitting streak to eight straight games.
OUAZ finished with seven hits as a team, but they had just two hits in the first six innings off the Redhawks starter DJ Peters (3-0).
Riley Grivette (1-2) gave up five runs in one-third of an inning.
Gage Johnson worked two scoreless innings.
Shane Flaningam struck out the side during his inning of work.
Montez added of the team, "We have a lot of baseball left and it's all in front of us and our success will depend on if we are willing to go get it. Leadership and toughness will be the determining factor. I am excited to see what this group decides to do."
OUAZ now heads to Atherton, California, where they will play a GSAC series against Menlo on Friday and Saturday.
