Big Innings Lead Spirit Past Coyotes

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ baseball team picked up a 15-3 non-conference win over Okanagan College on Tuesday night in the first of a two games this week against the team from British Columbia.
 
OUAZ (3-9) scored in five of their eight innings at the plate and had multiple runs in all five of those innings. The Spirit opened the scoring in the bottom of the first by scoring three runs without recording a hit. They also had a pair of four-run innings in the fourth and the sixth.
 
Adrian Salazar kept his hot streak going with a 3 for 4 outing and in doing so became the program's all-time leader with 125 career hits. Salazar hit a solo home run to start the third inning, picked up an RBI single in the fourth, and then set the record with an RBI double in the sixth.
 
Zachary Lehman and Eddie Ortiz had two hits apiece in the win as the Spirit totaled 11 hits as a team. They had six extra-base hits, including triples from Zehman and Hunter Lessard. OUAZ also set a school record with 12 stolen bases and they were hit by six pitches.
 
Kapono Rawlins went the first three innings on the mound and gave up one run on three hits with a pair of strikeouts. Riley Grivette (1-1) got the win with 1.2 innings of work and three hits and one run allowed. Juan Navarrete worked 1.1 scoreless innings and Hayden Sandman had two scoreless innings, including an immaculate inning in the eighth.
 
OUAZ will look to sweep the short series on Wednesday when they start game two on Royals Field 6 at 6 p.m.
