SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ men's volleyball team shook off another slow start to earn a four-set win over Hope International on Saturday afternoon for the program's first-ever win in Faith Arena.
OUAZ (6-2, 2-1 GSAC) won the match by scores of 25-21, 25-14, 24-26, 25-20.
Hope International (3-4, 1-2) jumped out to an early lead in the first set and it seemed the Spirit's sluggish play from Friday night was continuing into this match, when they turned things around with a late surge to pull out the first set.
After securing a 2-0 lead with little opposition in the second set, the Spirit surrendered an early led as the Royals rallied to force a fourth set. Tied at 16-16 in that fourth set, OUAZ ran off six straight points to begin a 9-4 run to close out the match.
Quentin Campbell dominated the match with a school record 26 kills while hitting .423. This was his first career 20-kill match as his previous high was 19 set during the 2018 season. Campbell added nine digs, one ace, and one block.
OUAZ had at least 15 kills in the three sets they won and their 58 total kills after a season high. The Spirit hit .257 while adding three service aces. They held HIU to 51 kills and .167 hitting behind nine blocks and 63 digs.
Quaid King added 18 kills and seven digs for the Spirit.
Joaquin Santa Cruz tallied a season-high 21 digs for his fifth career 20-dig match. He also led the team with a pair of aces.
James Yahner added 14 digs and tied with
Colin Donisthorpe for the team high with five blocks apiece.
