Lions Spoil Faith Arena Debut for OUAZ Men’s Volleyball

SURPRISE, Ariz. – In a match nearly three years in the making, the OUAZ men's volleyball team appeared to still be suffering the effects of their result at least week's NCCAA Invitational and were swept by Vanguard in the team's first-ever match in Faith Arena on Friday night.

Vanguard (4-1, 2-0 GSAC) was able to put together long scoring runs in each of the three sets to earn the 25-20, 25-19, 25-23 sweep in the Golden State Athletic Conference match. OUAZ (5-2, 1-1) fought back from down 18-11 to get within 24-23 in the third set before the Lions closed out the victory on the next rally.

The Spirit couldn't slow the attack from the visitors as Vanguard hit .289 for the match, including .462 in the second set. Each team would tally 34 kills on the night, but OUAZ committed 21 errors while Vanguard had just 10.

Quaid King led the OUAZ side with 13 kills on a .222 hitting night. Colin Donisthorpe added eight kills and hit .357 with Blake Music hitting .417 with six kills.

Joaquin Santa Cruz had 12 digs to help the Spirit to a 30-29 edge in the category. Music tallied two of the Spirit's three service aces.

Kyle Anema led the Lions with 14 kills.

It's a quick turnaround for the Spirit as they look to bounce back on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they host Hope International in Faith Arena.
