PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – The OUAZ men's volleyball team was close to repeating as NCCAA champions before Campbellsville stunned the Spirit to win the title in five sets on Saturday evening at DeVos Court.
OUAZ (5-1) held a 2-1 lead in sets and built a 24-21 lead in the fourth before Campbellsville – the No. 2 team in the NAIA – rallied to win the set and forced a deciding fifth frame. The Tigers (8-0) then rode that momentum to win the fifth set and the title with a 25-19, 15-25, 24-26, 26-24, 15-11 victory.
Campbellsville was able to limit the Spirit offensive attack by holding them to only 42 kills and .085 hitting. OUAZ hit negative in both the first and fifth sets and weren't above .241 for a set all match. The Tigers would record 51 kills on .111 hitting.
James Yahner gave the Spirit 13 kills and 11 digs in the match.
Quentin Campbell added 11 kills and seven digs.
Joaquin Santa Cruz had a team-best 16 digs and
Colin Donisthorpe had eight blocks.
OUAZ reached the championship match after winning their pool with a 3-0 sweep of Warner to start the day. They took down the Royals 25-22, 25-20, 25-22.
Quaid King had 18 kills on .371 hitting with Yanher adding 12 kills.
The Spirit held a 44-31 edge in kills overall and they posted four service aces and five blocks.
After the title match, the NCCAA announced that King and
Blake Music had been named to the All-Tournament Team.
