Second Half Onslaught Leads Spirit to Victory Over Westcliff

Box Score SURPRISE, ARIZ. - The OUAZ men's soccer team faced their first true test Thursday night, and through the first half it looked like the Spirit were in trouble. That all changed when the final 45 minutes began.

The Spirit scored three goals in 18 minutes to defeat the Westcliff Warriors 3-1. The first goal did not come until the 66', but it was a goal that felt like a long time coming.

Westcliff goalkeeper Josh Glover stifled the OUAZ opportunities up until the 66' minute. He finished the night with six saves, and it is a performance that was not surprising to some.

"(Glover) is an incredible goalkeeper," Gow said. "He was a first team all-GSAC goalkeeper before he went to Westcliff. Some of the saves he made were absolutely ridiculous."

Christian Gennaro netted the first two goal to get the offense rolling. Then Edoardo Venutolo scored in the 84', and it was a goal that he deserved. He had many chances earlier in the game, but was unable to get it past Glover.

"The way he continued to battle and the goal that he scored is a true representation of the work he put into the game," OUAZ head coach Matt Gow said, "because that was a workman's goal. He grinded. He got hit, got back up, got hit, got back up, kept going."

The game featured four yellow cards, three of which were handed out in the first half. Gow felt it was more about the tone of the game at the time rather than his team being undisciplined.

"It was a physical game, so when it's a physical game there's a lot of stuff that happens after the ball," Gow said. "It's just a matter of who's going to get the card for it. I think that (the official) tried to set a tone when the game started getting out of control, and we just got on the unlucky side of it because we had the next three fouls."

The Spirit will be off the next six days, and will be back in action on August 29 against Reinhardt University. They will stay in Georgia until Saturday, where they will take on Truett McConnell.
