SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ baseball team was swept in a doubleheader by Menlo on Saturday in Golden State Athletic Conference action. The Spirit fell in the first game 5-4 and then dropped the second game 14-1.
Both games were played on the Kansas City Royals Field No. 4 at the Surprise Stadium Complex.
GAME 1
Menlo would score twice in the first inning and held that 2-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth before the Spirit would breakthrough. OUAZ crossed the plate three times in the sixth – including one on an RBI single from
Connor Lowrie – to build a 3-2 advantage.
After Menlo went in front 4-3 with two runs in the seventh inning,
Chuck Steele tied the game with a fielder's choice in the bottom of the frame. Menlo took the lead for good in the top of the ninth with a one-out double and then an RBI single.
OUAZ tallied 10 hits in the loss with two apiece from
Chandler Reynard, Lowrie, and
Ryan Mortensen.
Cole Anderson allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits in 6.1 innings.
Taylor Campos (0-1) allowed one run on three hits in 1.2 innings.
GAME 2
Menlo scored three runs in the top of the first and never looked back in the final game of the series.
Derek Hayenga tripled in a run in the bottom of the first for the Spirit, but Menlo would then score five in the second to take control of the game.
The visitors scored in six of their seven innings and had multiple runs in an inning five times. They scored their 14 runs on just 10 hits and the Spirit staff gave up five walks and hit five batters.
The Spirit had eight hits as a team with Reynard getting three of them and Hayenga another two. The 3-hit game for Reynard is his third of the season and its his team-leading 13th multi-hit game of the campaign.
Miguel Cirino (1-4) was tagged for six runs in one inning in taking the loss.

OUAZ will host a non-conference game against No. 16 Benedictine Mesa on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The filed assignment will be announced on Monday.
