SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ baseball team broke out the offense in record setting fashion on Tuesday night to claim a 20-10 win over No. 16 Benedictine Mesa at Kansas City Royals Field No. 6 at the Surprise Stadium Complex.
OUAZ (19-21) set a school record with their 20 hits as they scored a season high 20 runs, just two off the record set last season. They had six extra base hits including a pair of home runs with all nine starters recording at least one hit.
Chandler Reynard tied a school record with five hits as he posted the second 5 for 5 outing in school history. He had one of the two home runs and scored five times with a pair of RBI and a walk.
Hayden Durkiewicz added a 4 for 6 game while tying the school record with six RBI and two triples.
The Spirit also got three hits – including a homer – from
Ryan Mortensen and three hits and five RBI from
Chuck Steele.
Connor Lowrie had a 2-hit game and
Fernando Lugo had a pair of RBI.
Durkiewicz started the game on the mound and gave up six runs (two earned) in 1.1 innings. After
Miguel Cirino departed after 1.2 innings,
Juan Navarrete (1-0) took control on the mound with three perfect innings, including eight flyouts, to earn his first career win.
The offense arrived early for the Spirit as they crossed the plate four times in the first inning. Benedictine Mesa (35-9) answered with six runs in the second inning before OUAZ got two back in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at 6-6.
OUAZ would blow the game open with a 6-run fourth inning before adding two runs in the fifth and five more in the sixth before posting a single run in the seventh.
The Spirit will now get set to a weekend home series against crosstown rival Arizona Christian on Friday and Saturday. The teams will play a GSAC doubleheader both days on the Royals fields at Surprise Stadium with the first game each day starting at 4 p.m.
