SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ baseball team opened a four-game weekend GSAC series with Menlo by splitting two doubleheader that was played on Friday. OUAZ rallied for a 6-2 win in the first game before falling in game two, 16-5.
The doubleheader was played on Kansas City Royals Field No. 4 at the Surprise Stadium Complex.
GAME 1
The Spirit managed just three hits through the first seven innings and found themselves trailing 2-1 entering their half of the eighth inning. The offense came through in the eighth and mostly with two outs.
After singles from
Chandler Reynard and
Austin Shumaker had two on and two out,
Race Traynor delivered a 2-run single to right to put the Spirit ahead 3-2.
Hayden Durkiewicz then singled up the middle to setup a 3-run home run by
Connor Lowrie to cap the 5-run inning.
Shumaker and Lowrie each ended the game with a pair of hits to lead the Spirit's 8-hit effort. Lowrie's added a triple to his homer for both extra base hits by the team.
Travis Hawkins took a no decision after allowing two runs on nine hits with eight strikeouts in seven innings.
Xavier Luna (1-0) allowed one walk in his inning to earn the win and then
Taylor Campos pitched a perfect ninth to seal the win.
GAME 2
It was the defense of the Spirit that let them down in the nightcap. Menlo struck for eight runs in the second inning with only one earned due to three OUAZ errors in the frame. The Spirit would add another error in the third inning that resulted in two of the three runs in that inning to be unearned.
Chuck Steele got the Spirit on the board with an RBI single in the third and then scored on a double from Reynard.
Fernando Lugo hit a 2-run home run in the fifth inning and then
Lester Acoba stole home for the Spirit's final run.
Steele had a pair of hits in game two as the team had seven in the loss.
Zack McLeod (3-4) took the loss in allowing eight runs (one earned) on four hits in 1.2 innings.
Daniel Cardenas pitched the final two innings and allowed two hits with three strikeouts and no runs allowed.

The two teams will close their weekend series with another doubleheader on Saturday on the Royals practice fields. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 11 a.m.
