SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – The OUAZ baseball team wrapped up GSAC play by splitting a doubleheader against No. 20 The Master's on Thursday afternoon at Herwaldt Stadium. OUAZ fell in the opener 13-9 before picking up a 5-1 win in game two.
GAME 1
Trailing 4-1 through four innings, the Spirit crossed the plate three times in the fifth and five times in the sixth to open a 9-4 advantage.
Chuck Steele,
Hayden Durkiewicz, and
Austin Shumaker all had two RBI hits during the two innings.
The Master's would erupt for eight runs in the bottom of the sixth, including a pair of 3-run home runs, to retake a lead they never gave back.
OUAZ recorded 13 hits in the game with Durkiewicz and
Chandler Reynard leading the way with three hits apiece. Shumaker and Steele added two hits each. Reynard had a pair of doubles.
Zach McLeod went 5.2 innings and allowed nine runs on seven hits.
Connor Lowrie (0-2) took the loss after allowing three runs.
GAME 2
Durkiewicz continued his impressive series at the plate with another three hits to lead the Spirit to a win in the series finale. His 2-run double in the second inning gave the Spirit a 3-0 lead with
Derek Hayenga adding a pair of RBI.
Adrian Salazar and
Fernando Lugo also had three hits in the game for the Spirit. Salazar added an RBI and Lugo had a double. The team finished with 13 hits.
On the mound,
Travis Hawkins (5-5) held the high-powered Mustangs offense to only four hits in a 7-inning complete game. He recorded three strikeouts with two walks to get his season record back to even.
UP NEXT
OUAZ will close their season next week with home games against Cetys Universidad. The teams will play a single game on April 30 at 5 p.m. and then two 7-inning games on May 1 at 1 p.m.
