SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ softball team celebrated their senior class on Saturday and picked up a pair of wins over San Diego Christian along the way. The Spirit won the first game 5-4 on a seventh-inning walkoff and they picked up a 6-1 win in the second game.
The Spirit moved their overall record to 14-25 with the wins. They are now 8-14 in the GSAC with two conference games remaining.
GAME 1
Neither team was able to generate any offense until the bottom of the fourth inning when
Vanessa Rodarte hit a 3-run home run to left field to give the Spirit a 3-0 lead. San Diego Christian would then take a 4-3 lead with two runs in each of the fifth and six innings.
Amanda Almond tied the game with a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the sixth and then
Alicia Young singled in the winning run with two outs in the seventh inning.
Rodarte had a hit in all four of her at bats to tie the school record for hits in a game. Young and
Ashton Aggers had the other two hits in the game by the team.
Sabrina Jimenez returned to the circle and allowed four runs (two earned) in 5.1 innings for a no decision.
Alexandra McCutcheon (6-10) earned the win allowing just one hit in 1.2 innings.
GAME 2
The Spirit scored six straight runs through the first four innings to win game two.
Amanda Almond had a pair of RBI in the game with
Emily Stebbins adding another.
Stebbins and Rodarte had two hits apiece to anchor the team's eight total hits with each delivering a double.
Serenida Marquez went the first three innings allowing just one hit and one walk.
Bailey Coronado (7-9) got the win by working the final four innings with four strikeouts and two hits allowed.
UP NEXT
OUAZ will head across the valley to play a non-conference doubleheader against Benedictine Mesa on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Chandler-Gilbert Community College.
