MESA, Ariz. – The OUAZ softball team split a doubleheader at Benedictine Mesa on Wednesday afternoon at Chandler-Gilbert Community College. The Spirit lost in the opener 6-2 before getting a record setting performance from
Bailey Coronado to win the second game 1-0.
OUAZ ends the day with a 15-26 overall record with one series remaining this season.
GAME 1
After the Spirit scored on an
Alicia Young fielder's choice in the top of the first, Benedictine Mesa scored five runs in the bottom of the inning to build a 5-1 lead they never gave back.
OUAZ knocked out nine hits – all singles – in the game and they stole five bases. They went just 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position.
Emily Stebbins and
Marissa Zacchio had two hits apiece in defeat.
Sabrina Jimenez (0-7) gave up five runs (four earned) in one-third of an inning.
Alexandra McCutcheon allowed one run on 10 hits in 5.2 innings.
GAME 2
Miranda Davis started the game with a bunt single. After she stole both second and third,
Caitlyn Swisher drover her home with a sacrifice fly. That would be the lone run of the game for either team.
Coronado (8-9) made it stand up as she allowed just four hits and struck out a school record 13 hitters. She had multiple strikeouts in five of the innings, including striking out the side in the second and sixth. Coronado held the Redhawks hitless in seven at bats with runners in scoring position and had no walks.
The Spirit needed every out Coronado got as they managed just three hits with
Kelly Stumper and
Sydney Saxton Siaki getting the other two Spirit hits. OUAZ was hitless in 10 at bats with runners in scoring position.

OUAZ will bring their season to a close next Wednesday, April 24, when they host Arizona Christian in a GSAC doubleheader at Willow Canyon High School.
