SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ softball team won for the fifth time in their past seven games with a 7-2 win over William Jessup on Thursday night at Willow Canyon High School.
OUAZ (9-20, 3-9 GSAC) tallied a school record 17 hits in scoring in five different innings to secure the GSAC win.
Trailing 1-0 after two innings, the Spirit – playing as the visitors as the game was a makeup of a rained-out road game earlier this season – plated a pair of run in the top of the third.
Vanessa Rodarte started the scoring with an RBI double and then scored on a single from
Amanda Almond.
Caitlyn Swisher extended the Spirit advantage with her RBI single in the fourth inning. After William Jessup (9-13, 4-8) scored one run in the bottom of the fourth,
Kelly Stumper drove in a Spirit run in the fifth inning.
Sydney Saxton Siaki would provide the final tally with a 2-run single in the seventh inning.
Five Spirit players had multiple hits in the game led by a 3 for 3 night from Almond. This is her second 3-hit game of the season and the sixth by a Spirit player. The top three in the OUAZ lineup –
Miranda Davis, Swisher, and Saxton – combined to go 6 for 13 with three RBI and two runs scored with two hits apiece.
Adding to the offensive production, the OUAZ pitchers held the Warriors to only six hits. Jessup had just two hits after the second dinning and left the bases loaded in the first.
Alexandra McCutcheon (4-7) earned the win by scattering five hits and two runs with five strikeouts in four innings.
Bailey Coronado allowed just one hit with five strikeouts over the final three innings for the save.
These same two teams will play their regularly scheduled doubleheader on Friday at Willow Canyon with game one slated for 2 p.m.
