SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ softball team split a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader against William Jessup on Friday afternoon at Willow Canyon High School. The Spirit took the opener 5-4 for a third straight win to tie the school record. They then dropped the second game 15-2.
With the day's results, the Spirit are now 10-21 on the season and 4-10 in the GSAC. The 10 wins matches the total the team had all of last season.
GAME 1
That 10th win of the season came in dramatic fashion as
Marissa Mitchell singled home
Alicia Young in the bottom of the seventh for the 5-4 victory. Young had put herself in scoring position with a one-out double prior to Mitchell delivering the winner as a pinch hitter.
OUAZ took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning with an RBI triple from
Ashton Aggers and a run-scoring single by
Clarissa Martinez.
Miranda Davis and
Caitlyn Swisher added RBI hits in the sixth inning to give the Spirit a 4-2 lead.
William Jessup tied the game in the top half of the seventh on a 2-run double by Lauren Garoutte.
Young and
Sydney Saxton Siaki each had a pair of hits in the game.
Marissa Zacchio joined Young and Swisher with doubles in the game and Young scored a pair of runs and stole a base.
Bailey Coronado (5-7) secured the win in throwing a complete game and allowing six hits with seven strikeouts. Her school-record scoreless inning streak reach 22 straight innings before the Warriors scored in the top of the third.
GAME 2
Things went bad quickly in the nightcap as the Warriors scored three runs in the first inning on their way to a 12-0 lead in the fourth. After the Spirit got two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a 2-run single from Mitchell, Jessup struck for three more in the top of the fifth to complete the run-rule victory.
OUAZ managed just five hits – all singles – in the loss.
Alexandra McCutcheon (4-8) took the loss in the circle.

Having win seven of their past 11 games, the Spirit will be back at Willow Canyon High School on Saturday when they host Menlo in a doubleheader that begins at noon.
