PHOENIX – Despite scoring just one run in 15 innings, the OUAZ softball team earned a split of a doubleheader on Saturday at Arizona Christian and made school history in the progress. After ACU won the first game 4-0, the Spirit came back to win game two 1-0 in eight innings for the first-ever shutout in program history.
With the split, OUAZ moves its record to 8-20 overall and 2-9 in GSAC play. Arizona Christian ended with a record of 20-9 and 5-6 in conference.
GAME 1
OUAZ managed just four hits in the opener and only twice had runners in scoring position. They trailed 1-0 after two innings and then Elsy Guzman hit a 3-run home run in the third inning for the final tally.
Ashton Aggers had two of the Spirit's four hits.
Amanda Almond added a double.
Alexandra McCutcheon (3-7) allowed four runs in 2.1 innings in the circle.
Bailey Coronado went the final 3.2 innings with just two hits allowed and five strikeouts.
GAME 2
Coronado (4-7) dominated the Firestorm in the second game to record the historic shutout. The lefty surrendered just two hits with five strikeouts in eight innings. With her 11.2 scoreless innings on Saturday, Coronado has gone a school-record 16.1 consecutive innings without allowing a run.
The Spirit needed the outing from Coronado as the offense again managed only four hits. The key hit was the RBI single from
Miranda Davis in the top of the eighth that followed the sacrifice bunt of
Kelly Stumper.
Emily Stebbins,
Alicia Young, and
Marissa Zacchio had the other three hits for the Spirit.
UP NEXT
The Spirit open the second half of conference play next weekend with five home games. They begin with a 3-game series against William Jessup that begins with a single game on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Willow Canyon High School.
