OUAZ Opens Series at William Jessup with Split

LINCOLN, Calif. – The OUAZ baseball team opened a weekend Golden State Athletic Conference series against William Jessup by splitting a doubleheader on Friday at McBean Park. OUAZ lost the first game 7-3 before winning the second game 8-3.

The game one loss snapped their Spirit's school record six-game winning streak. With the split, the Spirit are 16-11 overall and 6-8 in the GSAC. William Jessup moves to 16-10 and 10-8.

GAME 1
William Jessup scored three times in the bottom of the first and then added another in the second to take a 4-0 lead. The Spirit would get back within 4-3 with single runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings before the Warriors sealed the win with a run in the fifth and two in the seventh.

The loss spoiled the four-hit day from Esteban Martinez. It was the first four-hit game by a Spirit player this season and it led their 12-hit attack. Adrian Salazar added two hits and one RBI and Nicco Festa also had an RBI. Derek Hayenga recorded a double.

Travis Hawkins (4-3) suffered the loss on the mound after allowing four runs (three earned) in two innings. Hayden Durkiewicz was tagged for three runs in 4.2 innings of relief.

GAME 2
It was the Spirit that jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the nightcap. Adrian Salazar drove in the first run with a sac fly in the first inning and then Hayenga delivered a 2-run single in the third inning. Martinez hit a solo home run in the fifth inning and knocked in two more with a single in the seventh.

Martinez, Hayenga, and Salazar each had two hits in the win as the Spirit banged out eight hits as a team.  OUAZ got doubles from Salazar, Hayenga, and Ryan Mortensen to go with Martinez's first home run of the season.

Cole Anderson (3-2) scattered six hits and three runs (two earned) over 5.1 innings to get the win. Taylor Campos closed out his third save with one strikeout and three walks in the final 1.2 innings.
