SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ men's volleyball team had its seven-match wining streak snapped by No. 3 Benedictine Mesa in three sets in a Golden State Athletic Conference match at Willow Canyon High School.
OUAZ (13-7, 4-5 GSAC) had few answers for the regular season champions of the GSAC in losing 16-25, 14-25, 20-25. Benedictine Mesa (18-3, 9-0) recorded a 40-21 edge in kills while hitting .387 against the .054 of the Spirit.
The visitors started quickly with 14 kills and .565 hitting in the first set. That advantage coupled with their eight service aces and 30 digs kept the Spirit from mounting many comeback efforts. OUAZ did record seven aces and had five blocks.
Jacob Smith led the Spirit with five kills with
James Yahner adding five. Yahner also led the team with five digs and tied
Colin Donisthorpe with two blocks.
Ian Fields had 11 assists.
The Spirit will play their final home match of the season on Saturday when they host Concordia (Calif.) at noon.
