SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ baseball team followed yesterday's sweep of San Diego Christian with another one on Saturday to complete the first Golden State Athletic Conference weekend sweep in program history. The Spirit picked up a 10-3 win to start the day and then won 5-2 in the nightcap.
OUAZ has now won five straight games for the second time this season and at 14-10 overall they move four games above .500 for just the second time in program history. With the weekend sweep, OUAZ is now 5-7 in GSAC play and up to seventh in the conference standings.
GAME 1
With a 5-3 lead entering the bottom of the seventh, OUAZ would blow the game open with four runs in the inning.
Chuck Steele capped the inning with a run scoring single to left for his third RBI of the game.
The Spirit tallied 11 hits as a team with
Esteban Martinez posting three of them.
Austin Shumaker,
Derek Hayenga, and Steele all had two hits with
Adrian Salazar and Steele posting doubles for the team's only extra base hits.
Shumaker and Martinez scored three runs apiece. OUAZ also stole six bases after getting 11 off the Hawks in the nightcap on Friday.
Miguel Cirino (1-2) picked up the win after working 5.1 innings and allowing two runs on four hits with five strikeouts.
Hayden Durkiewicz went the final 3.2 innings to notch his second save. He allowed one run on four hits with three strikeouts.
GAME 2
Zack McLeod (2-2) was dominate on the mound to lead the Spirit to the game two victory. He scattered five hits over six innings with only two runs (one earned) allowed. McLeod struck out 10 of the 25 batters he faced with two walks.
Hayenga gave the Spirit a 4-0 lead with his 2-run single in the fourth inning. He then capped a 2-hit game by hitting a triple and scoring in the sixth inning.
Martinez also had two hits and one RBI. Steele recorded an RBI as well.
Taylor Campos worked a scoreless seventh with one walk and one strikeout to record his second save of the season.

The Spirit will head to Rocklin, California next weekend for a GSAC series at William Jessup on March 22-23.
