Spirit Steal First GSAC Doubleheader Sweep

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ baseball team swept a doubleheader in Golden State Athletic Conference play for the first time in program history on Friday with two wins over San Diego Christian. OUAZ setup the possibility with a 9-2 win in game one and they completed the sweep with a 7-5 win in game two.
 
With just their second sweep of a doubleheader this season, OUAZ moved to 12-10 overall and 3-7 in the GSAC. San Diego Christian drops to 7-18 and 2-12 with the losses.
 
GAME 1
OUAZ scored twice in the bottom of the first for a 2-0 lead. After the Hawks tied the game in the top of the second, the Spirit picked up another three runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good. They would add a single run in the fourth and three additional runs in the eighth.
 
In recording 13 hits in the game, five Spirit players recorded two hits apiece. Chandler Reynard had a double and a triple for his two hits. Chuck Steele also had a triple and Esteban Martinez and Nicco Festa each had a double.
 
Festa drove in three runs while Race Traynor had two RBI, including a solo home run in the second inning.
 
Travis Hawkins (4-2) was dominate on the mound with nine strikeouts in seven innings. He allowed just five hits and two runs. Taylor Campos went the final two innings and allowed just one hit with two strikeouts.
 
GAME 2
The second game saw the Spirit create scoring chances on the base paths. They set a school record with 11 stolen bases, the second-most in the NAIA this season. That allowed their eight hits to be enough to get a victory.
 
Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the third, OUAZ pushed three runs across with an RBI single from Steele and a 2-run double from Daniel Cardenas. They added two more in the fourth inning, including a straight steal of home by Adrian Salazar after he had already swiped second and third following his 1-out single.
 
The Hawks added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but the Spirit were able to get out a bases loaded situations in the sixth and seventh to secure the win.
 
Derek Hayenga had three hits and two steals. Salazar added two hits and three steals. Reynard added a double while Steele also had three steals.
 
Cole Anderson (2-2) earned the win after allowing four runs on nine hits in five innings. Hayden Durkiewicz forced a ground out on one pitch with the bases loaded to record his first save.
 
UP NEXT
The two teams will play another doubleheader on Saturday starting at 2:30 p.m. Both games are now scheduled for Royals Field No. 6. Due to the Kansas City Royals game being played in Surprise Stadium, parking will be limited and all fans entering the facility will have to go through security.
