Game Recap: Softball |

Missed Chances Hurt Spirit in Losses to Roosevelt

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ softball team dropped a pair both ends of a doubleheader against Roosevelt on Thursday afternoon at Willow Canyon High School. The Spirit fell in the first game 5-3 and then lost the second game 5-4.

With the two losses, OUAZ has now lost seven straight to drop to 3-17 on the season. Roosevelt moved to 5-10 with the two wins.

GAME 1
OUAZ took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a RBI double from Sydney Saxton Siaki, but Roosevelt answered with three runs in their half of the third inning to take a lead they never relinquished. Amanda Almond got one of the runs back with a solo home run to left in the bottom of the second.

The Lakers added insurance runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to extend their lead to 5-2. Alicia Young drove in a run with a single in the bottom of the sixth, but the Spirit would fail to score any additional runs in the frame despite having the bases load and only one out. They were then retired in order in the seventh.

Almond finished the game a triple shy of the cycle with her first 3-hit game of the season. That led the nine hits recorded by the team. The Spirit left seven runners on base with five in scoring position.

Alexandra McCutcheon (2-5) allowed four runs (two earned) on eight hits in 4.1 inning in the circle. Bailey Coronado went the final 2.2 innings allowing one run with five strikeouts.

GAME 2
Saxton would again drive in a run in the bottom of the first to give the Spirit a 1-0 lead in game two. After Roosevelt got a run in the third and two in the fourth to lead 3-1, OUAZ used RBI hits from Young and Marissa Zacchio in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 3-3.

The Lakers would retake the lead with an unearned run in the fifth inning and they added an insurance run in the sixth inning. Miranda Davis picked up an RBI with a groundout in the sixth inning to bring the Spirit back within one.

OUAZ loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the seventh, before two straight groundouts and a strikeout ended the game with the Spirit not being able to tie the game.

The Spirit managed just six hits in the second game, including two from Emily Stebbins. Three of the hits were doubles from the bats of Davis, Stebbins, and Heliana Bueno. They were 1 for 14 with runners in scoring position and 0 for 5 with the bases loaded to strand 10 of the 11 left on base in scoring position.

Coronado (0-6) gave up four runs (three earned) in 4.2 innings. Serenida Marquez allowed the fifth run and McCutcheon went the final 1.2 innings allowing just one walk with one strikeout.

UP NEXT
The Spirit are now headed for San Diego where they have a pair of doubleheaders on tap on Friday and Saturday. That begins with a GSAC game at San Diego Christian at noon at Friday at the Santee Sportsplex.
