Spirit Defeat Beavers in Program’s First Shutout

PHOENIX – The OUAZ baseball team recorded another first on Monday afternoon in a 6-0 win over Bemidji State at Firestorm Field for the program's first-ever shutout.
 
OUAZ (10-10) broke through with three runs in the bottom of the fourth behind RBI doubles from Hayden Durkiewicz and Chandler Reynard, followed by a run scoring single from Austin Shumaker. They got another RBI single from Shumaker in the sixth and a Nicco Festa 2-run single in the seventh.
 
The Spirit banged out 13 hits with eight of the nine starters recording a hit. Reynard and Shumaker had three hits apiece with Derek Hayenga adding a two-hit day.
 
Zack McLeod (1-2) started the shutout effort on the hill throwing five innings and allowing three hits with five strikeouts. McLeod started Bemidji State (1-10) runners in scoring position in four of his five innings on the hill.
 
Robert Jesionowski worked a scoreless sixth inning before Connor Lowrie allowed just one hit over the final three innings to earn the save.
 
OUAZ returns to Golden State Athletic Conference play on Friday when they open a weekend series against San Diego Christian with the first of two doubleheaders. Game one both Friday and Saturday will start at 2:30 p.m. on Texas Rangers Field No. 4 before the teams move to Kansas City Royals Field No. 6 for game two.
