SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ women's tennis team opened the 2019 season on Saturday with an 8-1 loss against NCAA Division II foe Western New Mexico at the Surprise Tennis Center.
Julia Ortiz earned the lone point for OUAZ (0-1) by taking her singles No. 1 match 6-1, 7-5. The win was the second of her OUAZ career in singles and fourth when adding doubles.
The Spirit dropped the other four singles matches and only won a total of four games. They conceded the No. 6 match without a competitor.
In double play, Ortiz and
Bianca Amaya forced the No. 2 match to 8-5 in defeat.
Hana Papaco and
Michelle Fournier dropped the No. 1 match 8-3. The No. 3 match saw Western New Mexico (1-0) earn an 8-0 win over
Jocelyn Torres and
Stevie Wenzel.
The Spirit will be back in action on February 15 when they host a pair of duals. They open Golden State Athletic Conference play at 9 a.m. against San Diego Christian before hosting Lewis-Clark State at 2 p.m.
