SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ baseball team dropped the finale of their three-game opening weekend series with Benedictine Mesa 5-3 on Saturday afternoon at Surprise Stadium.
After giving up three unearned runs in the top of the first inning, OUAZ (1-2) got one back in the bottom of the frame on a sacrifice fly from
Austin Shumaker. The Spirit tied the game in the bottom of the second with RBI singles from
Esteban Martinez and
Chandler Reynard.
Shawn Barrowdale put Benedictine Mesa (7-2) in front with his RBI single in the fifth inning and then the Redhawks added an insurance run in the eighth inning.
The Spirit had chances in the game but went just 2 for 10 with runners in scoring position and they left seven runners on base.
Jared Crockett and
Sam Haney each had a pair of hits for the Spirit
Zack McLeod took the loss after he gave up four runs (one earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts in his five innings of work. The bullpen of
Cole Anderson,
Connor Lowrie, and
Taylor Campos gave up five hits and one unearned run over the final four innings.
OUAZ will remain at home for their next seven games. They have a two-game series with Arizona Christian next week starting on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
