SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ baseball team opened a three-game non-conference series against Arizona Christian with a dominating 13-1 win on the Kansas City Royals No. 6 field at Surprise Stadium on Monday night.
Travis Hawkins led the way for OUAZ (2-2) with a school record 10 strikeouts in seven innings of work. After allowing a leadoff single, Hawkins held Arizona Christian (6-5) without a hit for the remainder of time on the hill.
The Spirit opened the scoring in the bottom of the third on a 2-run double from
Sam Haney.
Connor Lowrie added a 2-run triple as part of a three-run fifth inning.
Austin Shumaker finished the game with a pair of doubles and two runs batted in.
Adrian Salazar was a home run shy of the cycle and
Jared Crockett picked up a pair of singles. Haney added a sacrifice fly for a third RBI.
Travis Bailey allowed one unearned run in the eighth inning and
Travis Turner struck out the side in the ninth.
OUAZ racked up 13 hits and stranded six runners on base. They held the Firestorm to two hits and stranded three runners.
Game two of this series will be played on Thursday at 1 p.m. at Firestorm Field in Phoenix. The series finale is Friday night at 6 p.m. on a Royals practice field to be announced.
