SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ baseball team allowed Benedictine Mesa two innings of five-plus runs in a 14-4 loss on Friday night at Surprise Stadium. The teams have now split the first two games of the three-game series with the finale slated for Saturday at 1 p.m.
OUAZ (1-1) trailed 2-1 through four innings before Benedictine Mesa (6-2) pushed five runs across in the top of the fifth. Two of the runs in the inning were unearned. The Spirit got the deficit back to 7-4 before the Redhawks added one in the eighth and then got six in the ninth after consecutive errors by the Spirit. Six of those final seven runs were also unearned.
The Spirit committed a school record six errors in the game with three coming in the eighth inning and two more in the ninth.
At the plate, OUAZ scored their four runs on 10 hits.
Sam Haney delivered three of those hits for the team's first multi-hit game of the season.

Austin Shumaker, and Juan Navarette each recorded an RBI.
Miguel Cirino suffered the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) and five hits with two strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work.
Bryce Lopez worked out of a bases loaded situation in the eight without allowing a run.
Six different BenU players had two hits in the game. Aaron Vernon earned the win after allowing four runs and 10 hits in seven innings.
