Tennis Set for Busy Week of Home Matches

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ men's & women's tennis teams get back on the court this week where the Spirit play a variety of matches. After both teams host scrimmages on Wednesday and Friday, Western New Mexico is in town on Saturday. The matches against the Mustangs are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
 
All of the action this week will take place at the Surprise Tennis Center. Admission is free to all fans.
 
The OUAZ men enter Saturday's match at 0-1 on the season after falling to UC Riverside last month. Although the failed to win a match, the Spirit were competitive in most matches. The double team of Eduardo Couto and Leonardo Couto pushed their No. 1 match to 7-6 and then Eduardo Couto fell in his singles No. 1 match in three sets.
 
The Spirit will play their first season as members of the Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) this year. In the preseason coaches poll released by the conference on Monday, the Spirit men were selected to finish fourth and they received one first-place vote.
 
Western New Mexico will open their regular season against the Spirit on Saturday. The match will mark the first-ever meeting against the Mustangs for the Spirit.
 
The OUAZ women will play their first match of the 2019 season against Western New Mexico. They are coming off a 2018 season in which they went 2-5 overall. Michelle Fournier and Julia Ortiz return in 2019 after each recorded a singles win last season. Fournier also had a pair of doubles wins last season when pairs with Hana Papaco.
 
In the preseason coaches' poll released by the GSAC on Monday, the OUAZ women were picked to finish fourth in the conference this season.
 
Saturday's match is also the season opener for Western New Mexico. It will be the first-ever match between the two programs.
 
Both OUAZ teams also play a pair of scrimmages this week. The Spirit host Mesa Community College on Wednesday and New Mexico Military Institute on Friday.
