Glendale, Ariz.-- The OUAZ Men's Tennis team put together a strong showing at the GSAC Tournament this past week, advancing to the semifinals as the No. 5 seed after earning a 4–3 upset victory over No. 4 Hope International before falling to top-seeded Arizona Christian.
Quarterfinals – OUAZ 4, Hope International 3 (April 16)
The Spirit opened tournament play with an impressive comeback win over Hope International, using a dominant singles performance to overcome an early deficit.
Hope International claimed the doubles point, taking wins at No. 1 (7–6) and No. 2 (6–2), while OUAZ picked up a 6–4 victory at No. 3 doubles behind Max López-Gonzalez and Dashik Vieira.
Trailing 1–0, OUAZ responded in singles with four victories across the lineup. Arvid Lindblad set the tone at the top with a commanding 6–1, 6–3 win at No. 1 singles. The Spirit then found their rhythm in the middle of the lineup, where Fabian Wetter battled back after dropping the first set to win 4–6, 6–2, 6–2 at No. 3, and Kasper Olofsson followed with a strong three-set victory at No. 4 (2–6, 6–3, 6–1).
The decisive point came at No. 6 singles, where López-Gonzalez delivered a clutch performance, rallying for a 4–6, 6–4, 6–4 win to secure the team victory. Despite losses at No. 2 and No. 5 singles, the Spirit's depth and resilience pushed them past the Royals and into the semifinals.
Semifinals – Arizona Christian 4, OUAZ 0 (April 17)
OUAZ faced top-seeded Arizona Christian in the semifinals, where the Firestorm secured the win behind strong doubles play and quick results in singles.
Arizona Christian took control early, earning wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to claim the doubles point. The No. 1 doubles match featuring Lindblad and Novacek went unfinished.
In singles, the Firestorm clinched the match with straight-set victories at No. 1, No. 2, and No. 4. Lindblad and Novacek each competed at the top of the lineup but fell in two sets, while Kasper Olofsson dropped a 6–2, 6–2 decision at No. 4.
Several matches went unfinished after the team result was decided, including competitive positions at No. 3 and No. 5. At No. 6 singles, López-Gonzalez pushed his match into tight sets, falling 7–6, 7–5 in one of the closer contests of the dual.
The Spirit showed strong competitiveness throughout the tournament, highlighted by their quarterfinal comeback victory and multiple three-set wins across the lineup. OUAZ demonstrated resilience and depth against conference opponents, carrying momentum forward from a strong postseason performance.
