POMWAY, Calif. – The OUAZ baseball team ran its winning streak to five straight with an 8-2 win at Saint Katherine on Wednesday night at Escondido High School.
Trailing 1-0 after the first inning, OUAZ (8-3) scored the game's next six runs. They picked up a pair of runs in the second inning and then
Conner McKinney hit his first home run of the season in the third inning. He then added an RBI single in the fourth to cap a 3-run inning for the Spirit.
Saint Katherine (6-6) got their second run in the bottom of the fifth off OUAZ starter
Zachary Humphrey. The Spirit bullpen would close thee door with five shutout innings and only two hits allowed. Humphrey finished with two runs allowed on seven hits and three strikeouts in four innings of work.
McKinney and
Chandler Reynard posted two hits apiece to lead the team.
Esteban Martinez's RBI single in the fourth inning was the only other hit for the Spirit.
Riley Grivette (1-0) struck out the side with one hit allowed in the fifth inning to earn the win.
Connor Lowrie then went two innings with five strikeouts.
Robert Jesionowski and
Devon Lindley each had one strikeout in their one inning on the mound.
The Spirit will take this winning streak – one shy of the school record – into their first-ever Golden State Athletic Conference series that begins on Friday at No. 25 Westmont. The teams will play a doubleheader on Friday and Saturday in Santa Barbara, California.
