Baseball Swept by Westmont in First Day of GSAC Play

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The OUAZ baseball team opened Golden State Athletic Conference play on Friday by falling in both ends of a doubleheader against No. 25 Westmont at Russell Carr Field. Westmont won the opener 5-2 and then took the 7-inning second game 3-1.

GAME 1
Westmont struck for two runs in the second inning and three more in the third to build a 5-0 lead. OUAZ got one run back in the fifth inning on an RBI groundout from Ryan Mortensen that scored Adrian Salazar following a leadoff double.

The Spirit loaded the bases with one out in the sixth inning. They scored their lone of the inning on a sacrifice fly from Salazar, but Conner McKinney struck out to end the inning with the bases still loaded.

OUAZ pitchers kept the Spirit within three by holding the Warriors to just two hits after the third inning. At the plate the Spirit would get a runner in scoring position in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings, but they were not able to get any of those runners home.

Cole Anderson was recorded with the loss after allowing five runs on 10 hits in 5.2 innings. Devon Lindley had two walks and two strikeouts in his scoreless inning. Taylor Campos allowed just one walk in 1.1 innings of work.

Chandler Reynard had two of the Spirit's seven hits.

GAME 2
OUAZ managed just two hits in the nightcap with both coming during the top of the fifth inning. Trailing 2-0 at the time, McKinney and Derek Hayenga had consecutive singles to start the frame. After a Race Traynor groundout, Juan Navarette drove in the team's lone run with a sacrifice fly.

Westmont would add an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth.

Hayden Durkiewicz was hit with the loss on the mound for OUAZ after allowing all three runs on five hits in 4.1 innings. He had three strikeouts and no walks. Zack McLeod went 0.2 innings with one hit allowed and Travis Turner and a perfect sixth inning with one strikeout.
