ROCKLIN, Calif. – Playing their final weekend of the season on the road, the OUAZ women's basketball team began the trip with a 64-54 loss at William Jessup on Thursday night in Golden State Athletic Conference action.
OUAZ (10-14, 4-13 GSAC) never led in the game despite the deficit remaining in single digits for much of the contest. They were within 52-46 with 5:01 to play in the fourth quarter when William Jessup (19-9, 10-7) went on a decisive 12-4 run to reach their largest lead of the night of 14 with 1:40 remaining.
The Spirit ended the game with just eight turnovers, but their 35.0 percent shooting kept them from making any intended runs. They made just eight baskets in the second half and went 5 of 22 from beyond the arc for the game.
Alexis Smith led the Spirit with 18 points while
Jorie Mayfield added 12 points and seven rebounds. Mayfield also led the team with three assists and five steals.
Jessup scored 38 points in the paint and had a 54-20 advantage in rebounds. The Warriors had just six points from 16 offensive rebounds and the Spirit forced them into 22 turnovers that resulted in just eight OUAZ points.
Lily Hagerty scored 17 points to lead three Warriors in double figures.
OUAZ will bring their season to an end on Saturday when they play at No. 22 Menlo. Tipoff in Atherton, California is scheduled for 2 p.m. (Arizona).
