SURPRISE, Ariz. - A game plan does not usually include a strategy where a team does not lead for one second in the game. That is exactly what the OUAZ women's soccer team accomplished on Saturday, but they finally picked up the lead when it matters most.
Sarah Inafuku scored an overtime winner in the 94' to lift the Spirit over Hope International 5-4 at Spirit Field. The win pushes OUAZ to 2-0 in Golden State Athletic Conference play and 9-3 overall.
OUAZ had to overcome two separate deficits. Down 3-1, the Spirit tied the game at three just 1:55 into the second half thanks to
Kiiaweau Aweau. Then down 4-3,
Saipress Jones pulled OUAZ even in the 66'.
Inafuku blasted in her game winner from 40 yards out, chipping it over the head of Hope goalkeeper Amber Vasconcellos. It was a bold shot from the midfielder, but one that allowed the OUAZ to remain undefeated in conference play.
"I saw [Hope] pushing back, they were giving me all the space. I heard them yelling to pass the ball to my teammate, but I saw the open net, so I decided to take a shot, and pray it went in."
Inafuku came into the night tied with Jones for the team lead in goals. While Inafuku was the night's hero, her efforts still were not good enough to hang onto the team lead.
Jones scored two goals herself; the equalizer and the Spirit's first goal in the 39'. She is a breakout star in her first season, and she has does not have any complicated methods to finding success.
"I just push and hustle in everything I do," Jones said. "Regardless if it's a little 5v2 drill, we're scrimmaging another team, I work hard in every single thing I do because hard work in the end matters. Sounds cliché, but if you hustle to the end of everything, it will work for sure."
A young team like OUAZ may break down when they fall into a hole early. However, the Spirit found a way to overcome, and head coach
Skelly Kellar was proud of his team's efforts.
"Just the grit and the fight," Kellar said about his squad. "We never gave up, we kept pressing. We knew it was going to be a barn burner."
The next time the Spirit take the field will be on October 12 when they take on rival Arizona Christian. Kickoff from Spirit Field is scheduled for 5:30pm.
