SURPRISE, Ariz. - The OUAZ could not have asked for a better position to be in on Saturday. A home game against the cross-town rival for with a chance to stay undefeated in conference play. The Spirit did not waste the perfect circumstances.
Bopha Travis's first career goal was the game-winner as the Spirit defeated Arizona Christian 2-0 on Saturday night.
Saipress Jones added her tenth goal of the season just nine seconds before halftime.
It was a special night as the Spirit honored their senior class. The 2019 group has 13 seniors, including Travis, and a few of them have been at OUAZ since day one.
"That group just means a lot to me," OUAZ head coach
Skelly Kellar said. "They're such an amazing group of kids. They stuck with the program, with me, with the coaching staff. I can't speak highly enough of them."
The Spirit controlled the ball most of the second half, and finished with 17 shot attempts (six on goal). Both teams had many set pieces as well, including 15 total corner kicks between the two squads (nine for OUAZ, six for ACU).
The Spirit stayed solid defensively as well. They only allowed four shots on target, and goalkeeper
Krysten Caballero stopped them all. Caballero picked up her sixth clean sheet of 2019.
The Spirit will face its first road conference challenge next week when they travel to Northern California for two games. While the team is having success, the preparation and mindset will not change.
"Don't look back on what we've done, it doesn't matter," Kellar said. "We got to go win two more games."
OUAZ takes on Menlo next Thursday in Atherton, Calif., and then heads to Rocklin to face William Jessup on Saturday. Thursday's game is scheduled for 1:30pm, and Saturday's game has a start time for 11:00am.
