GOODWELL, Okla. – Playing a road game for the first time in nearly a month, the 20th-ranked OUAZ football team showed no signs of their long bus ride with an impressive 47-7 win over Oklahoma Panhandle State on Saturday afternoon at Anchor D. Stadium.
Panhandle State (1-3, 1-1 SAC) scored on the game's opening drive for a 7-0 lead before OUAZ (5-0, 3-0) countered with the final 47 points for their seventh straight Sooner Athletic Conference victory. The Spirit once again scored in all three phases.
After
John Williams kicked a 29-yard field goal on the Spirit's first possession, the defense forced a punt to setup
Shamar Moreland's 3-yard scoring run and a 10-7 lead after the first quarter. It was 17-7 after a
Joshua Vizcaya rushing score, and then
Marcus Farria forced a fumble that was return by
Christian Viville 40 yards for a defensive score and a 23-7 halftime lead.
The third quarter saw
Austin McCullough connect of touchdown passes of 40 yards to
Ray Springer and three yards to
Kavon Gardner. OUAZ also got another rushing score from Moreland in the quarter. Williams would cap the scoring with a 37-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.
OUAZ finished the game with 455 yards of offense and 29 first downs. They threw for 328 yards while gaining 127 yards on the ground with their 91 total plays. The Spirit went 12 of 19 on third-down and scored on all six of their trips to the red zone with four touchdowns.
McCullough was 27 of 49 for 325 yards and those two scores. A total of 10 different players had a catch with Springer leading all players with seven grabs for 119 yards – his first career 100-yard receiving game – and the one TD.
Vizcaya ended his night with 58 yards rushing on 14 carries while
Kristopher Ewens ran nine times for 56 yards.
Defensively, the Spirit allowed the Aggies to gain 398 total yards and 268 yards rushing. Despite the near 400 yards of offense, OPSU only crossed midfield four times in 14 drives, and one of those came on their 60-yard touchdown pass on their opening drive.
Aaron Mullins led the Spirit with nine tackles (five solo).
Alema Collins had four tackles-for-loss and one sack. Viville had 1.5 sacks and the fumble return score.
Rylen Kaniaupio had the team's lone interception.
Tony Brown gained 223 yards rushing for OPSU.
The win keeps the Spirit as the lone undefeated team in the SAC and they are the only conference team at 3-0. They return to the road next week when they face Texas College at 11 a.m. (CDT) / 9 a.m. (AZ) in Tyler, Texas.
