TYLER, Texas – After trading scores with Texas College early in Saturday's game at Mewbourne Stadium, the 18th-ranked OUAZ football scored 62 of the game's final 69 points to remain undefeated on the season with a 76-21 win.
Now 6-0 overall this season – and 4-0 in Sooner Athletic Conference play – OUAZ reached the 70-point mark for the third time of the year. The Spirit gained 550 yards of offense and recorded 29 first downs. They forced Texas College (0-5) into six turnovers while scoring in all three phases of the game for the third straight week.
The game was tied at 14-14 with 6:02 to play in the first quarter when
Jonah Alicea returned a kickoff 88 yards for the go-ahead touchdown. On the next Steers possession,
Marcos Garcia returned a fumble 33 yards and in less than four minutes of action the Spirit had doubled their lead to 28-14.
Kyandre Brooks had a career day in the win with two catches – both touchdowns – for 14 yards while also gaining 67 yards with a score rushing the ball.
Scotty Nixon led the rushing attack with his first career 100-yard game behind 132 yards and one touchdown.
Austin McCullough threw for 263 yards and four touchdowns.
Kavon Gardner caught six passes for 51 yards, while
Devin Benjamin had 51 yards and a score on his three receptions.
Donald Stokes Jr. tallied the fourth receiving touchdown.
Christian Woo led the OUAZ defense with three interceptions and he returned one of them 22 yards for a score. The three picks are a new school record and gives him four on the season. The Spirit finished with six sacks in the game from six different players.
Alema Collins,
Solo Moeai, and
Christian Viville all forced a fumble on their sacks. Collins also had a pair of pass breakups.
OUAZ ran for 277 yards as a team and they totaled 273 passing yards. They held Texas College to 287 total yards and just 69 yards on the ground.
The win sets up a showdown next Saturday at Spirit Field between the two undefeated teams in the conference as No. 16 Langston makes their first trip to Surprise. The Lions will enter the game having won 24 straight conference game dating back to the 2016 season.
