SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - OUAZ women's soccer team hit the road for a pair of pivotal GSAC matchups on this weekend in Southern California. The games have huge GSAC tournament implications on the line, and the opening matchup did not go the Spirit's way.
No. 8 Westmont scored three goals in the first 15:17 of the first half, and the Spirit were unable to recover as the Warriors took a 6-0 win on Thursday. The Spirit are now 5-2 in GSAC play.
The Spirit had a hard time getting the offense going, as they did not record a shot on target despite taking eight shot attempts. Westmont had 11 shots on target, led by Maddi Berthoud who recorded seven.
Berthoud had a goal and an assist, and Katie Stella had two goals and an assist for Westmont. OUAZ goalkeeper
Krysten Caballero made five saves in the loss.
The loss guarantees the Spirit will, at best, be the third seed in the GSAC tournament. They cannot finish worse than fourth in the final conference seeding. OUAZ is tied with The Master's at 5-2, and the two schools will face each other Saturday.
The winner of Saturday's matchup will clinch the third seed, though both team are guaranteed to host GSAC tournament first round matchups. Kickoff for the game in Santa Clarita, Calif. is scheduled for 11AM PST.
