SURPRISE, Ariz. - OUAZ was the only team left undefeated in GSAC entering its matchup with #15 Vanguard. It was a chance for the Spirit to pick up a statement win, and while they gave a valiant effort, it ultimately fell short.
Vanguard's Kelsey Bryant scored 6:10 into the game, and that is all the Lions needed to take down the Spirit on Saturday. The 1-0 victory pushed the Lions' GSAC record to 5-1, and dropped OUAZ's conference to the same.
The teams split possession for the most part, and the numbers show that as well. The teams had six fouls each. Vanguard had the four corner kicks to OUAZ's three.
The teams each had eight shots and three on target. OUAZ got two shots on target from
Haley Howard and one from
Chandler Schioppi.
The loss drops the Spirit into a four-way tie for first place in the GSAC. They are tied with Vanguard, Westmont and The Master's. OUAZ plays The Master's and Westmont next week.
The Spirit will travel to play Westmont Thursday, and then head to The Master's on Saturday morning. The Spirit have clinched at least a top four seed for the GSAC tournament, meaning that at the least OUAZ would host a first-round matchup at Spirit Field.
