SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The OUAZ women's basketball team fell below .500 for the first time this season after a 61-49 loss at No. 14 Westmont on Thursday night in a Golden State Athletic Conference game.
It was another slow start for OUAZ (8-9, 2-8 GSAC) as the allowed Westmont (14-6, 7-3) to score the first 14 points of the game. The Spirit would continue to battle and with 6:11 remaining in the third quarter they had cut the deficit to 37-32. The Warriors responded with a 19-2 run over the next 10 minutes to put the game away.
OUAZ had its best shooting night of the season as they tied a school record by making 47.4 percent from the field. That included five makes from beyond the arc and a perfect 8 of 8 at the foul line. They had 12 assists on 18 baskets while grabbing seven offensive rebounds.
Jorie Mayfield led the way for the Spirit by scoring 15 points on a 6 of 11 shooting night. She added four rebounds and four steals to go with three assists and two blocked shots.
Alexis Smith added 12 points and
Bailey Osmer finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.
The Spirit held Westmont to 39.6 percent shooting. The Warriors made eight 3-pointers and scored 28 points from 23 Spirit turnovers.
Maud Ranger led three Warriors in double figures with 17 points.
OUAZ now heads for Santa Clarita, California where they will face 10th-ranked The Master's on Saturday at 2 p.m. MST.
