SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ women's basketball team got off to a fast start on Saturday against William Jessup, but they weren't able to sustain in through the second quarter and eventually fell to the Warriors 75-64 in a Golden State Athletic Conference game at Willow Canyon High School.
Leading 19-9 after the first quarter, OUAZ (8-8, 2-7 GSAC) had just one basket in a second quarter that saw William Jessup (14-6, 5-4) outscore the Spirit 29-11. Despite the second quarte issues, OUAZ was able to rally back and tie the game at 54-54 with 7:08 remaining before WJU closed the game with a 21-10 run.
Alexis Smith recorded her first double-double and second of her career after scoring 13 points while grabbing 10 rebounds. Her first double-double came in her first game with the Spirit on October 24, 2017. On Saturday, Smith knocked down three 3-pointers while also getting two steals and one assist.
OUAZ ended the game shooting 27.9 percent as a team with nine 3-pointers. They scored 11 points from 12 offensive rebounds with just 13 turnovers. Jessup shot 45.3 percent and they committed 17 turnovers.
Bailey Osmer led the Spirit with 15 points. That ran her season total to 263 to surpass her own school record for points in a season of 260 she scored last year.
William Jessup had four players score in double figures with Emilee VanDyke leading the team with 17.
The Spirit will now get set for a trip to California to play a pair of ranked teams next week. The first of that trip in on Thursday when they play at No. 14 Westmont in Santa Barbara.
