Spirit Fall in GSAC Opener

Mayfield leads the team with eight kills

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Playing the first Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) competition in school history, the OUAZ women's volleyball team fell to No. 25 The Master's University in three sets on Friday night at Willow Canyon High School.
 
OUAZ (3-3, 0-1 GSAC) hung with their opponents from California for two sets before falling 25-16, 25-21, 25-7. After seeing 11 ties and five lead changes through the first two sets, The Master's (11-3, 1-0 GSAC) led the third set the entire way to complete the sweep.
 
The Spirit were unable to keep up the offensive effort of the visitors as they totaled just 25 kills on the night against 39 from the Mustangs. TMU hit above .400 in the first and third sets while holding OUAZ below .225 in all three, including negative-.120 in the third. For the night, OUAZ hit .059 and allowed TMU to finish at .341.
 
Jorie Mayfield led the Spirit with eight kills while adding two service aces and four digs. Seleni Bartley finished with seven kills and eight digs and Austin Edwards recorded six kills.
 
The Master's bolstered their cause with a 9-2 edge in aces and they also held a 37-30 advantage in digs and 7-5 in blocks.
 
OUAZ couldn't find an answer for Jane Cisar as she led the Mustangs with 14 kills and .778 hitting.
 
The Spirit have a quick turnaround as they return to action on Saturday against No. 7 Westmont College. First serve from Willow Canyon High School is scheduled for 1 p.m.
