SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ women's soccer team returned to Spirit Field on Thursday and the offense led the team to a 5-0 win over Providence Christian College.
Neither team found a goal in the first half despite OUAZ (5-2) taking 10 shots. That changed in the 49th minute when
Kaitlyn Kelsey struck from in close for her first goal of the season. Kelsey's goal was created by a through ball down the left side from
Mariah McDuffy and then a cross by
Sydnee Busby to open the offensive outburst.
Just over one minute later, Busby would notch her seventh goal of the season when she headed home a free kick from McDuffy to make it 2-0. Busby would then setup
Kiiaweau Aweau with a cross to the touchline for a tap in goal and 3-0 lead in the 68th minute.
OUAZ would again strike quickly as
Carley Cope put her first touch of the game into the net two minutes later. Cope would add the final goal of the game in the 72nd minute when she scored on a corner kick from
Keana Barrow that was touched back by
Tylar Williams.
For the game, held a 22-6 edge in total shots with 12 of those chances on goal. The Spirit 33 different plyers and got shots from nine of them. Busby led the team with nine shots – six on goal – with Cope adding four.
Addison Riddle and
Krysten Caballeros combined on the shutout with Riddle making two saves to earn the win.
OUAZ now has a week off before returning to Spirit Field on September 13 to host Benedictine University Mesa. That game is part of a doubleheader with the OUAZ men with first touch slated for 5:30 p.m.
