Spirit Keep Rolling, Shutout Red Hawks 3-0

Busby scores twice, assists on the third

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ women's soccer team recorded a third straight shutout on Thursday night at Spirit Field as they defeated Benedictine University Mesa 3-0 in the team's first game in a week.

OUAZ (6-2) created chances from the opening minute and went ahead 1-0 in the 16th minute when Kaitlyn Kelsey scored her third goal of the season on an empty net. Sydnee Busby created the opening tally with a cross from the right side of the penalty area to a wide open Kelsey in front of the net.

That would be the only tally of the first half despite the Spirit putting eight shots on goal in the period. Things changed early in the second half with a strike from Busby in the 60th minute. After Kiiaweau played a ball to Busby, the senior put her shut just inside the far left post from outside the area.

Busby would add a second goal – her ninth of the season – in the 84th minute with another deep shot to the left post that beat the keeper for an insurance goal.

OUAZ ended the night with 19 total shots and 10 of those attempts on goal. Busby had a team-high six of those attempts with four on target.

Emily Kriplean went the distance in goal to earn the shutout on three saves. Her second shutout of the season helped the Spirit set a new school record with its third consecutive game without allowing a goal.

OUAZ now takes a little time off before returning to action on September 22 in a home game against Saint Katherine. That game will begin at 10 a.m. in the start of a doubleheader with the men's team at Spirit Field.
