ATHERTON, Calif. – After opening conference play with four straight matches, the OUAZ women's volleyball played its first Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) road match on Friday at Menlo College where the Spirit suffered a 3-0 sweep.
OUAZ (6-5, 2-3 GSAC) hung around all night before falling by scores of 26-24, 25-19, 25-20. They again couldn't match the offensive output of the opposition as Menlo (7-2, 3-1) ended the night with a 44-31 advantage in kills and hitting .173 against the .120 from OUAZ.
The match featured 13 ties and five lead changes with eight ties and three changes in the first set. After the teams traded sideouts, the Spirit held set point at 24-23 when Menlo ran off three straight points to take the opener. The Oaks used a 9-3 run late in the second set to build a 2-0 lead. The home side then used an 8-2 spurt midway through the third set to lead them to the victory.
Gianna Kioa led OUAZ with 11 kills and
Jorie Mayfield added 10 kills.
Seleni Bartley,
Jessica Youngberg, and
Austin Edwards finished with three kills apiece.
Bartley added 15 digs with
Kelsey Marchant getting 10 digs.
Rachel Kater finished with 26 assists.
OUAZ held a 9-4 advantage in blocks to go with two service aces – Bartley and Marchant – and 63 digs.
Kekauoha Moea led Menlo with 12 kills while adding 17 digs.
The Spirit close out their trip to California on Saturday with a 1 p.m. match at William Jessup University in Rocklin, Calif.
