PHOENIX – The second day of action at the Firestorm Labor Day Invitational saw another split of two matches for the OUAZ women's volleyball team. The Spirit began the day by falling in three sets to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical before coming back to sweep SAGU American Indian College in the team's tournament finale.
The tournament was the first action of the season for OUAZ and the team ended the weekend with a 2-2 record.
Errors were the issue for the Spirit in a 25-20, 25-19, 25-17 loss to Embry-Riddle. OUAZ finished the match with 29 hitting errors against 31 kills. That accounted for the team hitting .018 in the match with two sets hitting negative. In contrast, Embry-Riddle had just 11 errors and the Eagles hit .238.
Jorie Mayfield continued her strong start to the season with a team-leading 11 kills while posting 10 digs for her first double-double of the season.
Austin Edwards would add seven kills with
Seleni Bartley finishing with six in the loss.
OUAZ turned things around against SAGU and earned their first sweep of the season by scores of 25-12, 25-18, 25-13. The Spirit held a 37-21 edge in total kills in the match while hitting .280 against the .036 from SAGU.
Destinee Blue totaled nine kills on .692 hitting to spark the Spirit offense. Bartley also notched nine kills and she added eight digs and one service ace.
Elizabeth Houk led the defense with 13 digs and four aces.
OUAZ and SAGU will meet again on Tuesday when the Spirit host their first home match of the season at 6 p.m. at Willow Canyon High School.
