SURPRISE, Ariz. – The Ottawa University Arizona women's soccer team battled through a lightning delay of nearly an hour in their 3-1 win over the University of the Southwest on Thursday night at Spirit Field.
OUAZ (2-1) took an early lead when
Paige Murray-Hernandez took a feed from
Breanna Brumet in the penalty area and scored in the ninth minute. The goal came on the first shot of the game and had the Spirit off and running.
Things changed in the 23rd minute when a counter attack from Southwest (0-1) led to a game-tying goal from the Mustangs. The teams would play the next 22 minutes without either team creating many chances.
At the half, the stadium was cleared due to lightning in the area and a delay of close to an hour kept the teams out of action. Once play resumed, OUAZ controlled the action of the second half for the home victory.
"We talked during the delay about how the lightning is out of our control so we need to just handle it," OUAZ Head Coach
Skelly Kellar said postgame. "We wanted to take advantage of the first 20 minutes of the second half and the team responded."
The Spirit would go ahead 2-1 in the 65th minute when
Sydnee Busby took a pass from
Keana Barrow and tallied her fourth goal of the young season.
OUAZ would add an insurance tally in the 77th minute.
Kiiaweau Aweau played a through ball to
Taylor Constance down the right side. Constance then played a cross into the keeper box where
Kaycee Youngs directed into the goal.
The Spirit ended the game with 15-3 edge in shot attempts and they put nine of those attempts on goal. They had a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks while being called for 14 fouls to the eight against USW.
Busby led OUAZ with four total shots with all of them on goal.
Maddie Myers had three shots and one on target.
Addison Riddle secured her first career win in goal despite recording no saves.
The Spirit will be back in action on Friday when they return to Spirit Field to host Antelope Valley. First touch is at 5:30 p.m. with a men's game between the same two schools to follow at 8 p.m.
