SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ women's soccer team needed a few extra seconds of time to pick up a 2-1 win over the University of Antelope Valley on Friday night at Spirit Field.
OUAZ (3-1) had a 1-0 lead into the 62nd minute behind the second goal in as many days from
Paige Murray-Hernandez in the game's 11th minute.
Sydnee Busby played a ball to Hernandez for the finish and early advantage.
Antelope Valley (0-2) generated it's best scoring chance in the 62nd minute and took advantage when Daisy Rodriguez got a shot off an OUAZ defender and into the goal. The net was open as
Emily Kriplean had come off her line to try and clear a ball in the area and she wasn't able to get back to prevent the scoring chance.
Just minutes later OUAZ was forced to play a man down due to a red card and seemed content on seeing the game into overtime. Once they got to eh extra session, the Spirit jumped on the opening whistle as
Kiiaweau Aweau played a through ball to a streaking Busby. That setup a 1v1 situation for the senior forward, and she converted her fifth goal of the year for an OUAZ victory just 22 seconds into extra time.
The win capped a night that saw the Spirit finish with a 12-4 edge in total shots with eight of those attempts on goal. Busby finished the night with three shots – two on goal – to lead the team.
Kriplean earned her second win of the season in goal with two saves.
OUAZ will spend next weekend on the road in California for a pair of games. They begin the trip in Santa Barbara for a neutral site game against Southern Oregon on September 1.
